When you look around your home and decide that some things need updating or changing you then have to decide if the home remodel is something that you can do yourself or need to contract someone to do for you. Here are 5 things to consider when you are deciding if your home remodel should be done by a professional are:

  1. Do you have the skills and knowledge to do it yourself? - Make sure that you have done something similar, or that you feel previous experience and current knowledge will make this an easy home remodel for you to do on your own.
  2. Do you have the resources available without having to spend more than you would to hire someone to do the home remodel for you? - It's easy for your eyes to be bigger than your pocketbook! Make sure that you have budgeted an appropriate and affordable amount for your home remodel.
  3. Do you have the time to finish it? - Make sure that you have the time to finish your home remodel, or you will end up with a hole in the wall, tiles missing from the bathroom floor, or a missing bedroom door for months on end.
  4. Do you have help if you need it? - Make sure to recruit family and friends to help with some of the labor of your home remodel.
  5. Make it fun! - Make sure that you are enjoying what you are doing. Too many times we lose sight of the joy it can bring to complete a home remodel on your own, with your own two hands. Enjoy doing it and it will be that much more rewarding.

So is it worth it? It is definitely worth it when done right!
Happy Remodeling!

Decorating after remodeling your kitchen may seem like a daunting task. The money may not be there but you can still get stellar decorating results on a budget!
Color! Color! Color!

Hanging your coffee mugs under a cabinet may seem old hat to some, but being able to buy individual pieces in most stores now can make it a colorful, unique, and inexpensive solution to a naked backsplash wall problem. Bold colors and designs are just the thing for small space. Keeping things from cluttering your counter top is always a good idea and hanging your coffee mugs can solve that problem while adding that extra flair!

Individual mugs can be bought for as little as $1.00 to $2.00 a piece. A large serving platter in the same design hung under the light behind your sink can tie it all together. Dishtowels in a color to match and you've Gotter-Done for as little as $25.00 to $30.00 total.

I suggest using a mug hanger with several hooks on it as opposed to individual hooks. This will create fewer holes in your cabinets. Be careful to space your mugs so that they hang comfortably next to each other. Careful planning in this area will definitely help in making fewer holes.

Don't be afraid to be bold and daring in your selection of coffee mugs. If your kitchen is simple, you may want to choose some fun designs on your mugs. If your kitchen is already a hodgepodge of colors, you may want to stay with more solid colors. The idea is to accent what you already have, to make it stand out and look fresh and new again!

Decorate Your Shelves With Something Other Than Dust!

Are you not sure what to put on your shelves? Try taking some of those clear, corked bottles and filling them with colored water. Inexpensive, yet wonderful when the light from your window or kitchen light reflects off of them. They will shine like jewels. Simple food coloring and water will get the job done. Experiment with color combinations. Combining colors can get you just about any shade you need. Doing a gradual light to dark can also be dramatic.

Be sure to fill the jar with water to the cork mark. Also take your colored water over to the spot you intend to display it in. See how the light reflects on it. This will help you determine if you need to lighted or darken the color for the effect you want. Less may be better in your greens and blues. They can often get too dense to let the light pass through. If you're not happy with the color you've got, simply dump the water and try again. Add a candle next to the bottle and watch the colors glow.

When the budget is tight, try one or both of these simple accents to add additional color and flair to your kitchen!

Installing new carpet in a room is best left to the professionals in my opinion. There is, however, a lot you can do to make your room just as fresh and new as the carpet. Doing the prep work yourself can save you time and money on the installation.

Picking Your Carpet

When you walk into the carpet showroom, don't be surprised if you find yourself moving frantically from one sample to the next. So many textures and colors to choose from can make you feel like a kid in a candy store. Take your time. Eventually you will find yourself gravitating towards similar shades of color and textures. Be sure to take the time to get all the information you need to make an educated choice.

There are several questions you may want to ask;

  • What is the twist?
  • What is the density?
  • What is the warranty?
  • Which is best for the amount of traffic in my room?
  • What is the best I can get and stay in my budget?

All this information can be found on the flip side of the carpet sample. Talking to a knowledgeable associate can put this all into perspective for you, helping to narrow down the choices even more.

Take several samples home. Checking colors against your furniture, walls, even a stone fireplace can prove to be enlightening. The natural light of day can bring out instant likes and dislikes. Keep in mind this can be a relatively expensive addition to your home. one that will be there for years to come. Changing a wall color to coordinate is a cheap fix. Buying new furniture, however is not. Throw your sample against sofas, chairs and the wood in your house. See what it does or doesn't do for them.

Padding

Choosing a pad is just as important as the carpet itself. Most often an installation quote will include the pad but be sure to verify this. There are new upgraded pads out there that have spill barriers. A good idea if you have little ones or a pet. Some new pads will also absorb odors, such as pet and smoke. Prices can run about a dollar more per square yard, but may be well worth it in the long run.

Prep Work

Doing the prep work yourself can save you both time and money on the installation.Tearing out carpet is a little work, but not as hard as people may think. A carpet cutting knife, needle nose pliers and knee pads should do the trick. Cutting the back of the carpet on the weave is easier than cutting on the nap.If you are removing the carpet alone, I suggest keeping the pieces 5'x5'. Rolled up carpet may is heavier than you think. Removing the pad is a piece of cake. The hardest part of that job is getting all the staples and nails out once it's done.Make sure to leave the carpet strips along the floor boards unless they are in bad shape and need to be replaced. This will save you time on the install.

Once your carpet is up and out you can take advantage of the bare floor and trim and paint your walls a new color or just freshen the old color with no worries. Doing this BEFORE the new carpet is in is the best way to go. If carpet is going in your closet, take this opportunity to give them a fresh coat of paint. Try choosing a soft shade of yellow inside. A bright closet tends to stay more organized than a dark, dingy one.
When your carpet is in you can sit back, relax and enjoy a fresh new room.

Some fresh ideas on displaying pumpkins may be as easy as looking in your back yard.

Pumpkin Displays

Not exactly keen on getting rid of that bale of hay after the fall season? Try using your birdbath as a perch. Using a bed of dried limbs and leaves can make a colorful base for your pumpkin sculpture. Corn stalks cut to size can be tied around the base for an even a more festive look.Changing out the pumpkin with a wooden bucket of gourds can take you into the Thanksgiving season.
Spotlights aren't just for Christmas anymore. A small sized spotlight with an amber bulb can add a warm and inviting effect to your home. Spotlighting your door with a beautiful fall wreath will surely get noticed.

Pumpkin Carvings

Instead of carving your pumpkin on the front, try cutting the eyes and mouth around the stem. Your pumpkin will appear to have a ghoulish nose and the ribs of the pumpkin make for great facial contortions. Cut a hole in the BOTTOM of the pumpkin for your light and lay the pumpkin on it's side for display.Using those greenish-black pumpkins to carve witches and crows can make for a chilling display. A grouping of pumpkins in black also makes for a chilling effect.

Start With a Clean Slate.
Empty your room completely. Take everything off of tables, counters, walls, and windows leaving no evidence of your kitchen's past life whatsoever.

Choose Your Main Accent Color.
You will want to choose a neutral color, and two accent colors. Your main accent color is going to be the one you want to see the most of, after your neutral color.

Pick Your "Color Spaces".
An example of a "color space" would be a backsplash wall and the soffit above your cabinets. Make sure you carry the color to another area of the room. Don't overdo by jumping all over with it. Two or three spaces, depending on the size of the room, are better than a lot of small areas. Think out of the box. A hutch in a corner can serve as your other area. It doesn't need to be a wall. Keeping your room as clutter-free as possible will help you to stay focused on keeping the colors balanced in the room. Keep your third accent color for your "eye popping" accents.

Put The Rest of Your Budget Into Your Decor.
Concentrate on a few really different pieces that will catch your eye and draw you to your focal points. Your window could be one, also a corner that really has no other function. Be careful not to spread things out all along the counter. This will defeat the purpose of having a clean, sharp look in the room. You want people to see the hard work you've done.

Be Creative With Your Window Treatments.
Window treatments have gone away from the little hanging window valance. Again, use your imagination. Three cloth placemats hung in half on a small spring rod can also be carried to your table in a matching runner. It's amazing the variety and options you have in placemats. You can economically change them with seasons or your every whim for as little as $2.00 a piece. Bamboo mats can be hot glued to the back of the rod and give a great natural look. Shutters are an option that no longer has to be hung on the window. Spray paint each shutter in your third accent color and hinge them together. Stand them on your sill if it's deep enough for privacy when you want it and take them away when you want the sun to shine . I like this look with shutters that go up the window only about 1/2 to 3/4 of the way up the window, leaving the perfect space for your placemat valance. Narrow glass shelves are another idea if you like to have a little green growing. Herbs in colorful containers such as canning jars can give you a wonderful warm feeling even in the winter months.
